Be Primary One Ready!

Now that you have secured a spot for your child in the desired primary school, what’s next for you and your child?

Parents often worry about the academic aspect in preparing for Primary 1. The Singapore academic system ensures that all schools are well-equipped with the resources needed to help your child learn the basics while enjoying what they learn.

Here are 2 common misconceptions about what your child needs to know before entering Primary School.

1. My child should be able to read and write in full sentences

Children are only expected to be able to express personal needs and wants, ask and respond to simple questions, as well as follow basic instructions.

Number blocks

2. My child must know how to add and subtract

Your child should be able to count to 10 and have number sense before entering Primary 1.(e.g. ‘more’, ‘less’, number grouping etc…) The mathematical concepts of addition, subtraction and solving problem sums would be taught in school.

Be well-prepared for school
Although reading and writing is not required at the start of Primary 1, having the basics of language firmly established would be helpful for your child to adapt quickly to the new routines, assimilate to school life and enjoy his or her time in school!

Similarly, exposing your child to numbers and getting them familiar with numeracy sets the strong foundation for them to quickly grasp concepts taught in school.
