Tuition Classes for Primary 4
As your child progresses to upper primary, there are more subjects to learn, and the focus shifts to mastery of skills and knowledge.
Our curriculum and lessons are designed to ensure that your child is not only able to master the content and techniques included in the MOE syllabus, but is also encouraged to speak up, ask questions, and further explore themes and concepts he or she is interested in via our unique learning approach.
Class Duration: 1 hour 45 mins
Class Size: Maximum 12 students
Overview of Primary 4 Programmes
MASTER KEY STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES
Ensures exam readiness of students by honing time management, question analysis and answering techniques. Regular review of concepts and personalised feedback strengthens content mastery.
READ WITH PURPOSE & EMULATE AUTHENTIC WRITERS
Children learn to read with a critical eye from various authors and inquire into children’s stories. The ability to summarise ideas, infer and draw conclusions to fully engage with a variety of texts. Children emulate authors’ writing and characterisation techniques to create engaging stories.
BECOME AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR
Children participate in lively class discussions and presentations to boost confidence, listen actively and articulate personal ideas and opinions.
CULTIVATE A CURIOUS MIND
Research shows that curious children attain better academic outcomes. Our children are exposed to a wide range of themes (e.g., sustainability, inventions, identity) and are challenged beyond the school academia.
CLOSE COMMUNICATION WITH TEACHERS
Receive regular updates about class performance from our teachers. Learning snapshots are sent termly to see areas of strength and improvement and teachers’ recommendations.
Themes and Language Skills
Through the course of our Primary 4 English programme, your child can look forward to learning the following:
- Narrative Writing
- Generate plotlines with a conflict and resolution based on given themes and pictures
- Apply writing techniques including varied sentence structures, slow-motion descriptions to enhance suspense
- Craft engaging introductions and satisfactory endings
- Creative Writing
- Gain exposure to different text types and genres (e.g., brochures)
- Reading Comprehension Skills
- Analyse key terms in questions
- Locate clues in the passage
- Construct relevant and precise answers
- Subject-verb agreement
- Question tags
- Sentence synthesis
- Continuous and perfect tenses
- Sentence synthesis (active and passive voice, correlative conjunctions)
- Infinitives and gerunds
- Reported speech
- In-class discussions and presentations (e.g., discuss about the consequences of one’s actions, personal milestones in one’s childhood, personal aspirations, discuss about relationships with others)
- Stimulus-based conversation and read aloud practices
- Various themes covered during the academic year include:
- Discoveries and Inventions
- Sustainability
- Travel and Adventure
What goes on in our English programmes?
Lessons are structured to help students investigate the craft of writing with examples from notable children’s literature (e.g. How did the writer make the character memorable? What were some of the writing techniques he used? How can we emulate them?)
Students are encouraged to learn grammar through a mix of implicit and explicit instruction (e.g. noticing patterns in different sentences vs listing of grammar rules)
Students hone their reading skills with integrated phonics components that include catchy songs / rhymes to stimulate their interest
Students engage in a wide range of themes (e.g. biodiversity, young game changers) throughout the year to ignite their curiosity in the world around us
“Develop Your Voice” modules encourage students to be active listeners and articulate speakers
ACHIEVE CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING
Children learn through the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach by recalling and building on pre-existing knowledge. During the programme, your child will explore and apply concepts beyond the syllabus.
UNLEASH CURIOSITY IN MATHS
Research shows that curious children attain better academic outcomes. Children will explore mathematical concepts through open-ended activities and develop a system of generating results from exploration of ideas and concepts. Our Maths tuition programme also extends problem solving through investigation.
COMPUTE WITH EFFICIENCY AND ACCURACY
Children will be able to confidently apply knowledge and address learning needs through weekly exercises and assessments. Each child will be exposed to a wide range of computation exercises and challenging tasks.
ACHIEVE HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT THROUGH PROBLEM SOLVING
Our Maths programmes guide students in mastering heuristic strategies for problem sums, identify task requirements by exploring similar concepts in different problems, and explore different solutions to the same problem.
ARTICULATE CONFIDENTLY
Children will learn to identify and correct errors, be confident in providing justification for answers and question assumptions made in problem solving. The Eton Academy encourages children to cultivate an open mind towards learning from and sharing with peers.
CLOSE COMMUNICATION WITH TEACHERS & PARENTS

Concepts and Skills
Some math concepts and skills that your child can look forward to in our Primary 4 Maths programme include:
- Whole numbers (patterns in number sequences, long division and multiplication, common factors)
- Fractions (equivalent fractions, fractions in its simplest form, improper fractions, mixed numbers)
- Decimals (compare, order, convert)
- Time (convert time, finding durations)
- Perimeter and area (square units, perimeter and area of rectangle/square)
- Angles (measure in degrees, construct angles, use 8-point compass)
- Line symmetry (identify lines, complete symmetric figure)
- Geometry (identifying angles, perpendicular and parallel lines)
- Table, bar and line graphs (read and interpret data, different scales on an axis)
- Act it out
- Guess and check
- Model method
- Make a list
- Making a supposition
What goes on in our Mathematics programmes?
Lessons are structured around weekly investigative problems to help students draw connections to real-life experiences e.g. how much water do we consume in a day? How can we represent it in different measurement units?
Students learn how to apply heuristics to solve a variety of math problem sums
Lessons use manipulatives, hands-on activities and class projects to give students a fun learning experience
Interactive activities and quizzes are used to engage students and check for understanding
Weekly stretch activities are included to help students deepen their understanding of each mathematical concept
Reviews of the prior week’s content are conducted at the start of each lesson to assess students’ readiness and consolidate students’ learning
SHARPEN ANSWERING TECHNIQUES
Children will master key points and effective strategies to form clear and succinct explanations for open-ended questions. In the Science tuition programme, children will achieve content mastery with regular topical reviews. Personalised feedback and targeted advice helps to identify learning gaps weekly practices to help hone critical thinking skills in each child.
DEVELOP SCIENCE LITERACY
Children will learn to pose questions and derive conclusions as a scientist would and analyse and synthesise information from exploratory projects to present coherent findings.
FUN SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS
Seeing Science in action helps children develop an appreciation of scientific concepts and an eagerness to immerse themselves in deep experiential learning.
NURTURE CURIOSITY AND INQUISITIVENESS
Research shows that curious children attain better academic outcomes. The Eton Academy’s weekly scientific investigations draw on our children’s desire to explore and investigate various scientific phenomena and everyday experiences.
BECOME AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR
Children will participate in thought-stimulating class discussions and learn how to articulate hypotheses, views and findings in a clear, logical and confident manner.
CLOSE COMMUNICATION WITH TEACHERS & PARENTS
