Building Confidence in Chinese: Kindergarten 2 and Primary 1 Programmes
At The Eton Academy, we believe that language learning should be joyful, immersive, and meaningful. Our Chinese programmes for Kindergarten 2 and Primary 1 are thoughtfully designed to support children at different stages of their learning journey, laying strong foundations in the early years and preparing them to meet the demands of Chinese as an examinable subject in primary school.
Kindergarten 2: A Strong Start with Zhong Hua
Our Kindergarten 2 Chinese curriculum is developed under Zhong Hua, The Eton Academy’s in-house brand for Chinese enrichment, which draws on the philosophy and expertise of the Zhong Hua Mandarin immersion programme by EtonHouse. Rooted in an inquiry-based approach, this curriculum blends language immersion with storytelling, music, movement, Chinese art forms, and cultural traditions. Children are surrounded by a Mandarin-rich environment where they are encouraged to listen, speak, and express themselves with confidence and ease.
Language is introduced and reinforced through meaningful experiences such as Chinese brush painting, poetry, calligraphy, traditional rhymes, and festive celebrations that allow children to connect with the language on a deeper level. Educators tailor their approach based on children’s interests and developmental needs, encouraging curiosity and self-expression while supporting the development of strong listening and speaking skills.
This approach lays the groundwork for early reading and writing, nurturing children who are not only confident in using Mandarin but also excited to explore its cultural richness.
Primary 1: Transitioning to Chinese as a Subject
At Primary 1, our Chinese curriculum is developed by The Eton Academy’s curriculum team and fully aligned with the MOE syllabus. Unlike the enrichment-focused approach in Kindergarten 2, this programme supports students as they make the important shift to Chinese as a core academic subject.
Lessons are structured to strengthen proficiency across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students engage in oral expression through visual prompts and guided conversations, develop reading fluency with short texts, and build writing skills through sentence construction and creative expression. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary development, stroke order, pinyin, and grammatical understanding to ensure a strong academic foundation.
The learning experience is supported by visual tools, revision resources, and hands-on language exploration, helping children grasp key concepts in a clear and relatable way. Designed especially for young learners, particularly those from English-speaking households, the programme cultivates confidence, resilience, and interest in Chinese as they navigate their first year of formal education.
Together, our Kindergarten 2 and Primary 1 programmes offer a seamless progression that fosters both a love for the language and the skills needed to thrive in school and beyond.
